Design systems are only as good as their implementation. A beautiful Figma library means nothing if the code component library drifts out of sync. The solution lies in centralized component libraries managed within a monorepo architecture.

The Synchronization Problem

Most organizations maintain design tokens in Figma variables and component implementations in separate code repositories. This creates a synchronization gap: designers update a color in Figma, but the corresponding Tailwind configuration in the codebase remains stale. The result is inconsistent UIs and frustrated teams.

Monorepo Architecture

A monorepo approach centralizes design tokens, component implementations, and documentation in a single repository. Tools like Turborepo or Nx handle build caching and dependency resolution, ensuring that changes to a token propagate to all consuming applications.

The structure typically looks like this:

Token Pipeline

The key is an automated token pipeline that exports Figma variables to JSON, transforms them into platform-specific formats (CSS custom properties, Tailwind config, Swift/UIKit), and publishes them as versioned packages. This ensures that every application consumes the exact same design language.

Lessons from Production

After implementing this at scale, the biggest lesson is versioning. Never share raw token files between applications. Always publish versioned packages and consume them through your package manager. This gives you control over when to adopt breaking changes.
